The week of May 24-30 was a big one here at Hands On Gulf Coast. We took on two big, important projects with our partners from the Mississippi Department of Archives & History and the Land Trust for the Mississippi Coastal Plains. Those projects could not have been completed without a tremendous amount of help from a corporate group of 30 volunteers from Kaiser Permanente. These volunteers descended upon Biloxi from all across the country in order to perform a week of volunteer service. On their first and second day, the volunteers did interior and exterior work on a historical home in Ocean Springs, MS called Twelve Oaks. On Wednesday, Thursday and a half-day on Friday, several of the volunteers came out to Woolmarket Elementary in Biloxi to work on the beginning stages of the school’s “Imagination Station” classroom. Alyce Spencer and Josh Poole, two HOGC AmeriCorps members from the Ohr O’Keefe Museum, designed amazing mural pieces to put on the classroom wall and then the volunteers came in and completed those murals. On their final day, the volunteers finished their respective projects at Woolmarket Elementary and Twelve Oaks and then participated in the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies dolphin stranding survey. After all of that hard work, they enjoyed one hell of a dinner at The Shed BBQ in Vancleave, MS. The volunteers had nothing but great remarks about their time spent here on the Gulf Coast. They definitely got a taste of good ol’ southern hospitality and then some. There is no doubt in our minds that this group of Kaiser volunteers will be returning next year for more amazing times and great volunteer service. Check out our Visit the HOGC Flickr site for photos from the mural project at Woolmarket Elem.
