Resident Outreach

Hands On secured a unique place in the Biloxi community after Hurricane Katrina, providing case management for residents struggling to navigate the regulations and procedures of FEMA and other assistance agencies as well as providing direct services for residents in need. In filling these needs in the community, Hands On was able to forge relationships with some of the residents we worked with on a regular basis. To supplement our case management program, we have also developed programs reaching out to elderly, single parent and Latino populations in Biloxi, providing guidance and information about health care, public assistance, legal, and other resources available to them, as well as a consistent friendly face and listening ear for residents who may not have visitors otherwise. Hands On volunteers and AmeriCorps members serve as translators and ESL tutors for Latino residents, companions and conversationalists for elderly residents, and mentors for single parents. Hands On also hosts group social events and classes for residents as part of our outreach program.
